Alternative Fuel Vehicles - A Review of Hybrid, Hydrogen, Electric, E85, Biodiesel and CNG Vehicles

Sphere: Related Content
Alternative fuel vehicles are automobiles that are powered by fuels other than gasoline. There are many alternatives that are now being used and tested in order to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Some examples of alternative fuel vehicles include:

Hybrid - Hybrid vehicles are powered by both a combustion engine and an electric motor. Advanced technologies for hybrids include regenerative braking, assisted power generated by the electric motor, and the process of powering down when idling. Hybrid cars are one of the most popular alternative vehicles on the market today.

Electric - These vehicles use an electric motor and electric controls instead of the internal combustion engine. Some advantages to the electric car include very low maintenance and zero emissions. Electric cars also do not give off as much noise pollution as a normal car. Some disadvantages include limited travel distance before having to recharge and slow acceleration.

Hydrogen - Hydrogen vehicles convert hydrogen to power through either a modified version of the internal combustion engine, currently available on the market today, or via hydrogen fuel cells which are still in development. Some obstacles in the development of hydrogen fuel cells is cost, fragility of the cell itself and poor performance in freezing temperatures.

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)- CNG vehicles run on compressed natural gas as opposed to gasoline. This kind of car is more environmentally friendly than a gasoline vehicle, and when compared to all the other alternative methods, is the safest. One complaint of CNG vehicle owners is the large fuel tank compared to that of conventional gasoline tanks, which limits trunk space.

Ethanol (e85)- E85 vehicles are powered by ethanol, a fuel made from corn and other natural products. These vehicles release no fossil based carbon dioxide. One disadvantage of this type of fueled car is that it is can be very difficult to start in cold weather. However, there are cold conversion kits on the market today that can eliminate this problem. Some people have simply added a couple gallons of gasoline to the tank prior to the cold season to eliminate the problem as well.

Propane - Propane vehicles are powered by propane fuel instead of gasoline. These vehicles are up to thirty percent less expensive than conventional gasoline vehicles to operate. Propane was approved by the 1990 Clean Air Act as an alternative fuel, and vehicles powered by propane produce thirty to ninety percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline engines.

Biodiesel - Vehicles that are powered by biodiesel are very similar to diesel vehicles in operation except for the fuel itself. Biodiesel vehicles can run on a combination of natural oil and an alcohol such as ethanol or methanol or exclusively on waste vegetable oil, from restaurant fryers or other food industries.

Limited petroleum sources combined with rising gasoline prices and consumer demand will encourage vehicle manufacturers to produce and develop alternative fuel vehicles. These vehicles, in the long run, will reduce transportation costs as well as benefit the environment.

Water as Gas, Full of Salty Possibilities

Sphere: Related Content
When the water as supplement for gasoline was released in the market, it immediately received public attention and interest. This is a totally good way of saving money on gas. Using water to gas conversion kits which is readily available for less than $100 was great break from the continuous and never stopping increase on the prices of gasoline.

It opened a great door for possibilities of discovering other alternative fuel that would help the almost empty purses to stay within the budget for gas and other necessities.

Then came the invention created by a 63-year old named John Kanzius that claims to create a source of alternative fuel from salt water. Kanzius discovered that under right conditions, salt water can burn at high temperature. Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2003, he decided to try to invent a better alternative for destroying cancerous cells in the body. He came up with the radio frequency generator, it is a machine that generates radio waves and focuses them into a concentrated area destroying the tumors without harming normal cells.

While conducting a demonstrations, an observer noticed that the RFG was causing water in a nearby test tube to condense. Thinking that if the RFG could make water condense, maybe it could also separate salt out of seawater. An effective means of removing salt out of seawater could save lives especially in the countries that are dying because of thirst. Kanzius then used his RFG with the goal of desalinization of salt water. During the first test, the water in the test tube sparked.

On the second trial, he lighted a paper towel and touched it to the water while the RFG is pointing to the water. The test tube ignited and continued to be aflame while the RFG is turned towards the test tube. Several universities tried to do the same test to prove if it could be hoax, but the same result happened. The salt water in the test tube ignited and remained ignited while the RFG is pointed to it.

But should we be worried? Since the world is 70% saltwater, it is probable that seas would suddenly be aflame because of a cigarette butt thrown to the sea? The radio waves from Kanzius RFG disrupt the stability of water, therefore releasing the hydrogen molecules. The heat coming from the RFG ignited them and it burned.

So is it possible to run our cars using salt water instead of gasoline? Back in 200, Hydrogen Technology Applications introduced the Aquygen.

Aquygen is a gas made up of hydrogen separated from water using electrical shock. This gas when mixed with regular hydrogen is said to create a more efficient fuel than gasoline alone (from www.howstuffworks.com). So could this have paved the way for the Kanzius discovery? Will salt water be used as ordinary water. Upon Kanzius assertions points out, that creating fire and fuel from salt water is possible. But separating hydrogen, oxygen, sodium and chloride is needed to be done first. Then sodium will then be burned. However, this process would consume much more energy that the energy that this produces.

The beauty with science is that it’s a never ending world of possibilities. What could be impossible today may be possible in the future. In the past, using water to run cars seems to be impossible. So who says that we should close our doors for salt water as alternative fuel?

BMW's Hydrogen Fuel Quest

Sphere: Related Content
Think a hydrogen powered car is a farfetched idea? Think again! BMW is hard at work in their quest to become the first automaker in the world to have a production vehicle available that can run on hydrogen fuel. 2008 looks like the date when the first hydrogen powered BMW could be made available, infrastructure in place or not.

German automaker BMW is on a quest, one that may likely make them the first automaker in the world to produce a fleet of vehicles capable of running on hydrogen fuel. That’s right, BMW is leading the way and if all goes as promised the first hydrogen cell powered production BMW will hit the streets in 2008.

Back around 2000, General Motors announced that they would work toward building a fleet of vehicles that could run on hydrogen power. When that announcement was made few thought that hydrogen technology could be successfully tapped and used in a car. However, if it was to come about, most people thought that it would take at least 20 years to come to pass.

In 2004 BMW announced that they, too, would bring hydrogen powered cars into production. But, the automaker said that they would accomplish this feat much sooner – by 2008! As it stands today it looks as if BMW may be well on the road to meeting their lofty goal as automotive blogs are currently commenting on recently surfaced photographs showing what appears to be a hydrogen powered BMW. Specifically, a V12 powered BMW 7 Series has been spotted being tested in Germany and it was learned that this particular test car also had a working alternate fuel source available, namely hydrogen.

Several things still need to occur before hydrogen fuel cells are a readily accepted and available alternative to the internal combustion engine. These include:

The cost of developing hydrogen fuel cells. Currently, the price of fuel cells is prohibitive but technological advancements are lowering that cost. When the cost drops below that of outfitting a vehicle with an engine, than hydrogen fuel cells will become a viable alternative.

Production and storage concerns. Currently, significant amount of fossil fuels must be used to develop hydrogen cells. In addition, storing hydrogen can be a problem and transmitting the fuel through existing natural gas lines doesn’t look possible given the fuel’s negative interaction with steel. Hydrogen proponents are calling on the U.S. government to authorize “Manhattan Project” type funding to create an all new distribution system across the country. Speculation on the cost of implementing a hydrogen infrastructure is in the hundreds of billions of dollars, perhaps well over one trillion dollars.

Should the day come when hydrogen powered vehicles are produced and some sort of distribution system is created, two big benefits will emerge: American dependency on foreign oil will evaporate and greenhouse gas emissions will drop considerably. These two reasons alone may be enough for BMW, General Motors, and other automakers to continue with hydrogen fuel cell development. Will the government step in to help out? That remains to be seen.

Using Byproducts to Fuel Hydrogen Cars

Sphere: Related Content

One of the key sticking points of going to a hydrogen economy is how are we going to produce enough hydrogen to fuel both car and home? Current methods include steam reforming natural gas and electrolyzing water.

If a hydrogen economy is to come to fruition in the near future, we will most likely need many methods for producing hydrogen. Renewable resources for producing hydrogen will include biomass and ethanol, wind farms, tidal energy, hydroelectric energy, solar and other experimental resources such as gravitational energy.

Another resource for producing hydrogen will be in capturing hydrogen that is currently (or in the future) being produced as a byproduct for other processes.

Clean coal technology is one of these processes currently being developed in order to turn coal into electricity. Hydrogen is to be captured during this process and sold as a secondary commodity. Noxious fumes are to be sequestered providing near zero emissions.

Hydrogen is also a byproduct of producing sodium-chlorate, which is used to manufacture pesticides and bleaches. In Vancouver, Canada it is said that there is enough hydrogen as byproduct to power 20,000 hydrogen cars for one year. This technology will be featured in the 2010 Olympics to be held in Vancouver.

Current nuclear reactors can also be modified to use the steam they produce in cooling the reactor to do high-temperature electrolysis to produce hydrogen. The Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative as well as researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory are already moving ahead with studying this technology.

It's good to know that in moving to a hydrogen-based economy, we don't have to totally reinvent the wheel, only upgrade the wheel to current and future needs.

Using Hydroxy HHO Gas EFIE Devices to Improve Fuel Economy

Sphere: Related Content
Clearing up water gas technology misconceptions

Before we go any further, we need to clarify one or more misconceptions in this regard.

Water gas technology is becoming a hot, hot and hot topic these days - and why not, with the fuel prices reaching the roof and all. It seems that everyone is saying that this is the solution to our fuel dependency problems. We can finally run our cars on tap water alone - a concept that we have earlier though to be a pipe dream and nothing more. But is this really possible?

One: the water gas technology cannot afford us the power to run our cars on mere tap water alone - at least not on the commercial level. Rather, we use H2O (also known as HHO) as a fuel economy booster; or some element we could use to maximize our car's fuel use. We still need to buy gas with this technology.

In automobile history, the only time that water has successfully been used as fuel source was when engines ran with steam power. The locomotive industry used this extensively for years. However, steam powered engines are cumbersome and bulky, and needs a large storage of fuel source like coal or wood. These are definitely not something you can install in modern day cars.

Two: not all ready made engines can use water gas technology. Most, if not all of these said engines will have to undergo necessary makeovers.

Three: although there are many online companies now offering do-it-yourself manuals on how to convert your car's engine to something that can use the water gas technology, it would still be better to have a professional mechanic or engine builder perform the necessary changes. Otherwise, you will only be putting your car (and you!) in danger.

How does water gas technology really work?

To simplify matters, we are going to couch this explanation in layman's terms. Water gas technology would obviously need more specialized equipment to process the water as fuel economy booster. You would need a water reservoir to place in your tap water; an HHO generator that will separate the two elements of hydrogen and oxygen; and HHO cells which will finally convert the separated elements into energy (hydroxyl gas.)

The actual process is the following:

1. Water is introduced to the water reservoir. Usually, there is a particular ratio (depending on many factors like: car make, engine make, and other additional engine components) as to how much water should be added for an amount of gas. Let us just say that for this particular example we will have 1:10 ratio, where 1 is the gas liter and 10 is the water liter.

2. The generator creates an electric spark that eventually heats up the water as it flow from the reservoir to HHO cells. The cells in turn separate the elements of water: hydrogen and oxygen.

3. Oxygen is released as a by product of this process which is less toxic than most fuel emissions.

4. Hydrogen is also a gaseous element which is then mixed with the small amount of gas in the tank. This can be done through the installation of vacuum tubes from the hydrogen producing cells to the actual car engine. The resulting hydrogen-water mixture has enough power to run the car or any light vehicle for a period of time.
